Yoga 50+ is aimed at more mature age groups who want to improve everyday flexibility, strength and balance through a mindful and safe yoga practice. The class is suitable for all levels, including complete beginners.

 What to expect

The first thing to expect is a warm welcome whatever your age or experience! But Yoga 50+ is special because it recognises and normalises the physical niggles and issues that often come along as we age.

You can expect a complete but gentle yoga experience including:

  • relaxing breathing exercises to focus the mind and bring fresh energy into the body
  • gentle joint mobilisation to warm up the neck, spine, shoulders, wrists, hips, knees and feet
  • careful sequencing that avoids sudden shifts from high to low positions
  • flowing movement to include careful weight bearing and muscle strengthening postures
  • fun yet safe balance practices to challenge the brain as well as the body and boost confidence
  • soothing cool-down postures, done seated and lying down
  • a final phase of deep guided relaxation to nurture the nervous system and melt away any last bits of tension.

There will always be plenty of modifications to help keep you safe and happy on the mat. We always encourage you to let the class teacher know about any long-term or recent conditions/injuries that might affect your movement. The teacher will offer appropriate and discreet modifications to keep you safe and comfortable.

 What you will need

Please bring a yoga mat (we do have a couple of spares if you need one) and a soft blanket is recommended for cushioning the the body and cosying up during our final relaxation.

Wear loose joggers or leggings and a loose top or t-shirt. A second layer, such as a jumper or cardi, is always good to have for warm up and cool down.

If you can, avoid eating a big meal before your yoga practice. You’ll enjoy your movement much more if you don’t have a full stomach. But of course, if you need to, a light meal is perfectly fine.

Bring some water too. Even gentle yoga requires good hydration.

Please also complete the health questionnaire and bring to your first session if you haven't done one previously

Sandra McNerney

Sandra believes movement should be a highlight in our day; not another thing on our to do list. Her philosophy is simple: if you enjoy your exercise, you’ll come back for more. It’s regularity and consistency that will unlock the amazing benefits of movement in the body and mind.

Sandra is a qualified yoga teacher and also runs popular chair yoga classes in partnership with Harrogate Library. She knows that yoga isn’t for everyone and Use it or Lose it focuses solely on mobility, stretching and balance work, without the spiritual and philosophical sides of traditional yoga.

She specialises in working with students in the 50+ age group, creating a safe and welcoming space for beginners and more experienced movers alike. She is experienced in adapting and modifying exercises to make them accessible and enjoyable for all.
