Martin life

Start date: 23rd Apr 2025

Time: 19:00 - 21:00

Cost: £84

Day: Wednesday

Duration: 4 weeks

Tutor: Martin Kerrison

Course code: 25SU061

This 4 week course in Life Drawing builds confidence and teaches skills, exploring strategies for representing form, structure and surface qualities in a variety of materials; working from tutor-led exercises, demonstrations, group critiques and examples of contemporary and historical art. This is a mixed ability class open to those with some art and life-class experience or none at all.

New students are very welcome and can be given an introduction to drawing from the figure if appropriate to the experience of the individual. Students may take part in taught activities or use the sessions to develop their life drawing with as much or as little tutorial input as they wish. The art room is well equipped with a wide range of drawing and painting materials, and students may bring their own if they wish. Life Drawing is an invaluable way to learn key skills in art. In addition to adults, the course is open to 6th formers and for A Level students it helps build portfolios for examination and college/university entrance.

Martin Kerrison

I am an artist and educator, having extensive experience as a senior school and adult education teacher. I teach drawing, painting, life and portraiture classes to all ages and abilities, exploring a wide range of materials and approaches. I believe art benefits all and everyone has creative potential.
My art practice focusses on figurative and magical realist painting and I have exhibited widely, most notably at the Royal Academy Summer Exhibitions in 2022, 2020 and 2015.
Graduating from Northumbria University with a degree in Fine Art, I took a PGCE at Oxford and an MA in History of Art at the University of London. I taught art for many years in the London area, working as a Teacher of Art and Art History, Adult Education Tutor and Head of Art and Photography, before relocating to Yorkshire in 2021.
When not at the easel or in the classroom, I can often be found enjoying countryside walks, historic buildings, singing in local groups or playing cricket.
