Lucie Arti-Burrows
Fine Artist - using mixed media but primarily working in oils.
I graduated in 1998 with a BA(Hons) Degree in Fashion-Print Design from Central Saint Martins College of Art and Design, London.
Having had the benefit of working for a wide variety of designers and companies (The Royal Opera House, Alexander McQueen, Paul Frith, Andrew Groves …….), I have learnt skills in many different areas and disciplines.
I have also studied at Charles H Cecil Studios(Florence, Italy), a private Atelier where students undergo a rigorous training in the practise and tradition of drawing and painting from life using the “sight-size” method whereby the image and subject are placed side by side at a distance in order to perceive the whole.
My artwork is deeply inspired by the beautiful scenes and captivating details I observe in the world around me. I find motivation in vivid landscapes, intriguing objects and meaningful moments that ignite my imagination. When something stops me in my tracks and stirs artistic visions within, I thoughtfully analyse the composition, colour, harmonies, lighting and patterns. I take the time to interpret what it is that emotionally moves me then recreate it by translating the images, feelings and interpretations into my own style of painting.
My goal is to share this process of being inspired by life’s beauty and challenging what resonates with me into meaningful works of art. I utilise my understanding of colour, technique, balance and expression to transform visions into paintings rich with soul.
My process often begins with an observational study from life - gathering reference photos, sketches, or even physical objects that capture the essence of my subject. As I translate these source materials to the canvas, they undergo a transformation. Details are simplified, colours become more vivid and expressive and forms dissolve into area of pure brushwork.
As an artist, I believe that anyone can draw and create-it’s simply about making marks on paper or canvas and allowing the pencil or brush to take the lead. My work celebrates the fundamental act of artistic expression through line, colour and texture.
I avoid having preconceived notions about where a piece will go, instead following the inherent tendencies and surprises that emerge as I work. Any apparent “mistakes” are often embraced and incorporated. The pencil, pen or brush in hand becomes almost another appendage, an extension of the impulses, emotions and energies flowing through us in any given moment.
