France is coming out of the Mad Years of the  20s. Money is spent o the Ligne Maginot enabling the Hexagone to defend itself against a resurgent and vociferous neighbour.  To the south Fascism continues to gain support. The first real left-wing government is elected in 1936, creating both hope and division in society. Industrial output has never been so high and so destructive. Art, music, cinema and theatre production reaches its peak in the 1930s . By the last day of the year  1940, however, everything has changed... And not for the better.

The course will look at the developments in France in all the aspects of its culture during this significant decade in its history.
