France is recovering from the losses and the destruction of World War II. The various successive governments of the IVth Republic face new and very serious challenges to their intended policies.  The French motto (Liberty, Equality, Fraternity) does not sit well with colonisation. Southeast Asia, West Africa, Madagascar and especially Algeria are problems which urgently need to be addressed.  Closer to home the economy is booming, Europe is developing, a new world order emerges, being a member of the atomic bomb fraternity, De Gaulle in then out then back in again. New forces appear in the arts. How will the country cope?
